Three-year-old Max sat up in bed and rocked at night for long periods to soothe himself to sleep. His mother thought that it would be best for him if she laid him back down each time this happened. She was sure that he would rock the rest of the night if she did not do this. Since this was happening four or more times a night, his mother was getting exhausted.

Max had already had a neurological workup and an overnight sleep study and neither revealed any problem. Since body rocking is usually not harmful to a child, Max’s mother began letting him sleep with lots of pillows around him on a twin mattress on the carpeted floor of his bedroom. His mother stopped going in at night to lay him back down. His mother still watched him on a video monitor from her own room for a few more weeks and noticed that he always laid back down after a period of time. He began waking less often and did not hurt himself in any way with this new arrangement. His mother soon felt much better about his body rocking and about his ability to get restful sleep, and she slept better herself without needing to get up so often at night.
